Chairman/manager Lee Morris says Armthorpe Welfare’s prestigious friendly against League Two outfit Doncaster Rovers provides his club with the chance to showcase themselves to the local community.
Armthorpe are expecting over 1000 people – their biggest crowd since Doncaster’s last visit in 2017 – for tomorrow’s clash and Morris is very excited.
“The club haven’t had (Doncaster’s first team come down for a friendly) for many years, let’s put it that way,” Morris told Non League Yorkshire.
“It is a real coup for us to get them down and hopefully the weather stays good and we get plenty of people through the gate.
“It is going to be a massive occasion for the club.
“I just hope we get a good turnout because (a friendly against Doncaster) has been a long time coming for Armthorpe.
“We’re trying to break into the community and we’re pushing the game because there is a lot of people in Armthorpe who don’t realise there is a football team in Armthorpe which is surprising.
“That’s the bridge we have to build with the community.”
Playing against the might of a professional side provides the ultimate challenge for Armthorpe who are expected to have some of Morris’ summer arrivals in their squad.
“We have been training for the past few sessions without the ball so they’re not using to have the ball,” Morris quipped.
“It is going to be a good test for us and we’ll be testing our new signings out against the first team of Doncaster.
“If there are a few people there it should be a very good game.”
