Yorkshire Trophy
Yorkshire Amateur 3-2 Thackley
Ash Flynn’s double edged Nathan Cartman’s Yorkshire Amateur to victory in their opening Yorkshire Trophy Group B encounter.
Ammers were particularly impressive going forward. They caused Thackley a host of problems and deserved their victory.
Joe Mitchell, the ex-Silsden captain and summer signing, hit a peach of a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner to open the scoring.
Thackley substitute Simon Poole’s afternoon went from one extreme to the other and he gifted possession to Flynn for the second goal close to the half-time.
Flynn then curled a shot from the left-side of the penalty area past top Thackley goalkeeper Luke Wilson.
The Ammers should have added a third straight after the break.
Flynn had rounded the goalkeeper and sent the ball into a goal-bound position where Adam Priestley blazed over from inches out.
Poole then redeemed himself as he hit a breath-taking shot into the roof of the net from distance.
That provided a lifeline for Thackley which lasted around a minute as Flynn struck a looping shot over Wilson for his second goal.
Whilst it was nothing on the failed Panenka, Flynn wasted the chance to complete his hat-trick as he fired a penalty miles wide.
This is around the point when Ammers made six changes and Thackley came more to live.
The Ammers still remained dangerous but Thackley looked good for a couple of goals.
Poole crossed and presented Non League legend Tom Greaves with a simple tap-in.
Unfortunately for Paddy McGuire’s Thackley, they could only score one and the Ammers held on for the win.
