Shaw Lane win Dan Wilkinson Memorial Match

Shaw Lane captain Ryan Qualter collects the trophy from Dan Wilkinson’s family and Craig Wood

Dan Wilkinson was remembered when Shaw Lane Old Boys beat Brighouse Town Old Boys in Sunday’s Memorial match.

The first meeting between the sides since the tragic events of September 2016 raised over £700 for the Dan Wilkinson Foundation.

Shaw Lane won the fiercely-competitive encounter 6-4 – Alex Byrne will have impressed the watching talent scouts with his three-goal haul.

The managers from 2016 – Craig Elliott and Paul Quinn – assembled strong squads.

Ex-Brighouse boss Quinn had his big guns playing such as Leon Osborne, striker Harry Stead, Tyrone Gay and right-back Lee Ashforth.

Oscar Radford placed Shaw Lane ahead with a long range screamer.

Osborne equalised before Jono Wafula restored Shaw Lane’s lead with a clever lob.

Right-back Lee Ashforth gained valuable minutes ahead of the new season

Craig Elliott, the top West Yorkshire-based manager of the last 20 minutes, added another trophy to his CV

Predatory goal-getter Stead levelled the contest close to half-time.

The see-saw theme continued into the second half.

Byrne got his first of the afternoon before Alex King drew it level again.

Byrne scored again soon after.

Full-back Ashforth, who was getting valuable minutes in ahead of the new season, had a decent game and he regularly mopped up several mistakes made by centre-half Dan Illingworth.

Ashforth was rewarded for his efforts with a penalty which made it 4-4.

With penalties looming, Shaw Lane nabbed victory – Byrne sealed his treble before Baz Frankland converted a penalty.
