Penistone Church Reserves boss Scott Briggs backs Terry Simon’s call for a ban on clubs paying players at Step 7.
Wombwell Main chief Simon said last week he did not feel it was right players earning sums of money for playing in an amateur league.
Briggs says he supports the Wombwell manager.
“I have been trying to sign a few players and I’ve either missed them or had to battle with another club who is paying,” Briggs told Non League Yorkshire.
“The only thing I can offer players is the camaraderie of the lads in the changing room and the facilities we have got.
“Without having a budget to offer money to players it is hard.
“I agree with Terry 100% that it is making it difficult and it is also the fairness as well.
“This year we have a lot of youngsters and they don’t get paid (like the rest of the squad) yet (other players from other teams) will get paid.
“It is unfair.
“If it becomes more common (players getting paid) it will be only be a terrible thing for the league.
“I also read a lot of the comments on Facebook (about Simon’s interview) and obviously a lot of people agree with him.”
Penistone kick off their season with the League Cup clash with Swinton Athletic Reserves this evening and Briggs hopes for a big turnout for the home First Round clash.
“We have had a a few good crowds for pre-season,” he said.
“We played Dinnington and then we played we Berry Brow and Ecclesfield Red Rose and there were decent crowds down.
“It is a brilliant opener and everyone is ready for it.
“We want to do well in the Cup and it is another bit of silverware we can get our hands on.”
