Wakefield boss steps up search for a striker

Gabe Mozzini says Wakefield AFC’s need for a new striker is now a matter of urgency.

With Jake Morrison out of action, Wakefield’s lack of focal point was there for all to see in the disappointing display in the 2-0 defeat to Harrogate Railway – their second loss In a row.

Wakefield now have a two week break from league action and Mozzini is aiming to achieve a lot before their clash with Staveley Miners Welfare.

“We definitely need a number nine,” Mozzini told Non League Yorkshire.

“Jake is going to be out for a few weeks so that’s what we are working on.

“Strikers are the hardest ones to sign.

“We’re Step 6 and there’s other teams who offer more money than we can pay but we’re working hard to sign a number nine.

“(The next two weeks) are very important.

“Hopefully we will sign a new striker and we are going to have four training sessions.

“We’re going to work really hard and I’ve told all the players that they have to show up.”

Mozzini took charge in January and implemented a new way of playing which turned them from a mid-table side into a title-winning team in the EV2 Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League.

Teams could not get near them but the jump to Step 6 has seen them lose to the likes of Retford FC, Campion, Worsbrough Bridge and Harrogate.

Wakey are also without key men Danny Youel, Morrison, Jock Curran, Brad Swain and James Morris.

“We’re not able to create dangerous situations in the final third,” he said.

“That’s the big problem which we need to fix.

“We are able to keep possession in areas which are not dangerous.

“When we go into the crowded areas where you should create chances, that’s where we are struggling.

“Last year in Step 7 there was more space so we have to adapt.

“This season we have been out-played a few times.

“We were out-played against Campion, we were out-played by Retford.

“With the new players we have got we need our football again so I was telling the fans that the tape (of the Harrogate Railway game) is one I’m going to watch over and over again to work out exactly (what went wrong).

“We’re going to go on the training pitch and work hard so we produce on a Saturday.”

What Mozzini won’t do is abandon is his football philosophy.

“If we decide to change the way we play we would have to change several players which we’re not going to do,” he said.

“I trust the players we have and I know they are capable of doing it.

“We’re going to work on the things we need to work on (in training) so we can improve.”
