Liam Ormsby celebrates his opener in Nostell Miners Welfare’s 3-1 win over Rossington Main

Nostell Miners Welfare produced one of their best performances of the season to stun high-flying Rossington Main at Crofton Community Centre.

Two quick-fire early goals put the visitors on the back-foot and they never truly recovered against a Nostell side who worked their socks off.

Rossington had started on the offensive but a counter-attack from Nostell changed the dynamics of the contest.

Charlie Parnell broke into the penalty area, forcing goalkeeper Ryan Musselwhite to come out and close down. That allowed Parnell to square the ball to Liam Ormsby who slotted into the net.

A handball from Greg Young – perhaps harshly awarded – then enabled Nathan Hawkhead to strike home a penalty.

Nostell had further chances. Musselwhite denied Ormsby in a one-on-one situation.

The ex-Pontefract Collieries was then fortunate to escape a red card after upending the striker outside the penalty area.

Rossington, who did look dangerous going forward throughout, thought their begun their fight-back straight after the interval with relative ease.

Substitute Tyla Bell made it look simple when he netted with a fine strike two minutes after coming in.

Nostell dropped deeper and deeper and Rossington looked a sure bet for an equaliser.

Yet it didn’t come as Nostell managed to mount an attack and Parnell’s brilliant volley from the edge of the penalty area gave the home side back their two goal lead.

What They Said

Nostell Miners Welfare manager Ian Walker

“When we score first we tend to win.

“We got another one quickly and we’re difficult to break down.

“We made them go out of their comfort zone which is to knock the ball around well.

“They having to go a bit more direct and they probably aren’t as comfortable with that.

“The lads worked really hard.

“We had four regular starters missing and the lads have come in and absolutely nailed their shirts for the next game because they just worked hard for each other.”

Rossington Main manager Ben Hunter

“I’d probably agree with you (that it was one of our worst performances of the season).

“Nostell played well and we caught them on a good day but ultimately we allowed that to happen.

“There’s no excuses.

“Individual errors have cost us for the first two goals.

“We were 2-0 down at half-time, chasing the game.

“We started the second half quite well by getting a quick goal.

“They scored a great goal which knocked the wind out of our sails.”
