Brighouse Town propelled themselves right back into the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title race with a sensational 8-1 win over second-placed Tadcaster Albion.
Brighouse had blown Tadcaster away at half-time as a Tom Matthews hat-trick had helped them rack up a 6-0 lead. The heavy wind did help Taddy in the second half, but Brighouse held on.
Brighouse boss Paul Quinn was delighted and the result means his side can go top if they win their six games in hand.
Quinn told the club’s official audioboo account: “The word to describe (the team’s performance) is outstanding from start to finish.
“I’m more satisfied with the second half more than the first half because we arguably had the conditions in the first half and I’m sure the opposition management team were quoting that at half-time.
“If it had been 6-3 or 6-4 people would have looked it and said that we had the benefit of the conditions in the first half. But to come out for the second half and defend like we did and play like we did was more satisfying than and I’m absolutely delighted.
“We obviously wanted to win the game, but to win the game in this manner is an bonus. You go through one to fourteen and you can’t fault one of them.
“I thought defensively we were outstanding in really difficult conditions.
“In terms of the score-line we never anticipated it would be like that. To be fair to Tadcaster sometimes you have one of those days and you can’t take anything away from us, we were absolutely on it today.”
Matthews, Ernest Boafo, Ben Thornton and Joe Jagger had given Brighouse their unassailable half-time lead.
Former Nostell striker Danny Critchlow pulled one back for Taddy on the hour, but no spectacular comeback was forthcoming and Boafo and Jagger made the defeat even worse for the visitors.
Garforth Town needed a late penalty to secure a 1-1 draw with Albion Sports.
Josh Cartman’s spot kick cancelled out Danny Facey’s earlier strike.
Thackley won 4-1 at Maltby Main and Pickering Town lost 3-0 to Long Eaton United.
AFC Emley threw away a 2-0 lead in the 2-2 stalemate at Selby Town.
Paul Sykes opened the scoring on his return from suspension and then Doran Jordan doubled the advantage.
But, Danny Gray and Steve Lyon hit back for Selby.
Two late Marcus Edwards goals gave Eccleshill United a 2-1 victory over Dinnington Town.
Pontefract Collieries won 4-0 at Hemsworth Miners Welfare – Chris Kamara, Liam Radford, Gareth Grant and Kingsley Wetherald the goal-scorers.
Lee Holmes and Jordan Hatton scored in the final minutes to ensure Rossington Main beat Louth Town 2-0.
