Hemsworth Miners Welfare pulled off one of their greatest ever wins by beating Northern League giants West Auckland Town in the FA Vase.

In a game billed as a titanic battle for the Wells, Wayne Benn’s came out 3-2 winners against the 2012 and 2014 finalists to reach the Vase second round for the first time in the club’s history.

West Auckland are not the team they once were, but the task facing the Wells was still very difficult.

It did look a tall order after ten minutes as Ian Maddison headed home at the back-post from a corner to give West Auckland the lead.

However, Hemsworth hit straight back with Bill Law scoring the rebound from his own effort which was saved.

The Wells upped the ante in the second half by creating a few chances, although West Auckland had a number of their own.

It wasn’t until the closing stages that Hemsworth struck gold when Danny Critchlow scored two quick-fire goals to put the tie beyond West Auckland and create history for his new club.

The visitors got one back through Jack Procter in the dying minutes, but Hemsworth weren’t to be denied one of their greatest moments.
