Hallam are into the FA Vase second round for the first time since 2010 after first half goals secured a 2-1 victory at Selby Town.
Michael Blythen and Jordan Turner got the goals as high-flying Hallam extended their unbeaten run on the road to ten games.
Chris Jacson gave Selby a glimmer of hope of forcing extra-time, but Hallam defended resolutely to see themselves over the line.
Hallam’s frightening attack was ultimately the difference in a first half that the visitors dominated most of.
Selby received warning after warning as Turner got in behind on a number of occasions – the offside flag saving them on a few of them.
A fast-moving play broke the deadlock on the half hour mark. Selby’s defence was all at sea as Daniel Flynn unselfishly passed to Blythen, who slid the ball home with help of Ciaran Gibson’s left-hand post.
Still Selby let the visitors cause them huge problems. Micah Bishop thought he had scored when his curling effort sailed towards the top corner until full-back Chris Banks raced back and headed the ball over the crossbar for a corner.
Banks wasn’t able to help a minute later though as Turner once again breached Selby’s back-line and spectacularly scored with a long range lob.
With a slight change in formation, Selby put up a fight in the second half.
Jackson brought Selby back into it with a half-volley on the hour mark before Louis Rowbottom headed just over the crossbar.
Hallam though were defensively strong and led by their excellent goalkeeper David Darwent, Ryan Hindley’s men dealt with every Selby attack to book their place in Monday’s draw.
Selby Town manager Dave Ricardo: “I’m disappointed and frustrated by the first half performance.
“Hallam are a good side and they work hard. They have good energy and they have good players.
“If we had played like we did in the second half in the first half we would have won the game.
“Fair play to Hallam because they deserved to win. We gave ourselves a too bigger mountain to climb and you can’t give teams like Hallam a two-goal head start and expect to win a game.
“It took us 45 minutes to defend properly.”
Hallam manager Ryan Hindley: “We knew Selby work hard and they’re not far off the top ten so we knew it would be tough.
“I spoke to my pal at Shirebrook who said they work hard and have some talent and I agree with that.
“I just think we took our chances and over the 90 minutes I think we deserved to get through.
“We have this thing about playing away and that is now ten games unbeaten away from home. I think that tells you a bit about our character which we had to show today.”
