Alex Romaniw’s second half equaliser secured a 1-1 draw with Dronfield Town and ensured new Glasshoughton Welfare joint managers Simon Houghton and Craig Wilkinson remain unbeaten.

After a truly tepid first half the game livened up slightly in the second period and, after Owen Blake had given the visitors the lead, Romaniw scored his second goal for the club to earn them a point.

Welfare’s manager duo brought Andy Seed and Del Pollock back into the side and also introduced new striker Matty Roberts who replaced the suspended Ashley Scothern.

The first half was basically a dour affair although Pollock did strike a volley at goal after ten minutes which cannoned back off a post.

The diminutive striker was also denied after 38 minutes when he chased down a ball which visiting keeper Lewis Naylor miskicked. Pollock shot twice at goal but Naylor managed to block the ball on both occasions. The only goal scoring chance for Dronfield fell a couple of minutes later when Jordan Watson blocked an effort from Christian Savage.

Welfare started the second half on the back foot with Blake curling an effort just over the bar. Welfare then had an escape when a goal bound effort struck a Dronfield player before looping over the crossbar.

The home team were not so lucky on sixty five minutes when the defence appealed for offside but play went on and the ball was slotted past Watson by Blake.

Ten minutes later Welfare equalised. Good work on the right saw Luke Durham play the ball across the visiting penalty area and Romaniw shot home from ten yards.

In the last few minutes Pollock looked as though he had poked the ball home but it was somehow cleared away and then Gareth Hunter crossed, but Naylor just beat substitute Nathan Keightley to the ball.

Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Craig Wilkinson: ”I thought we deserved to win the game.

“We created the better chances but let’s focus on the positives. We didn’t lose the game and we played well in patches.”
