Glasshoughton Welfare exited the League Cup at the 3rd round stage when they were beaten by a strong Pickering Town side at a chilly Leeds Road.

Although going down to an early goal Welfare were unlucky to go into the break losing. The side gave an excellent first half performance and with better finishing in front of goal, and, with what appeared to be a stonewall penalty waved away, the visitors were somewhat lucky to be leading after 45 minutes.

Due to the recent weather problems the home officials had not been able to work on the pitch and the game kicked of on a sticky and bumpy surface.

The opening goal came after five minutes when slack marking at a free kick in the home penalty area saw Joe Danby nip in between defenders and he shot past Jordan Watson.

Welfare came back a couple of minutes later when Alex Romaniw hit a shot in from the left which just cleared the crossbar. Then Del Pollock was played in and with only Pikes keeper Toby Wells to beatt he shot straight at the keeper.

Pollock had another great chance on twenty five minutes when once again he bore down on goal. As he shot it appeared that a defender pulled him to the floor and as Wells saved easily referee James Price waved the loud appeals of the welfare players and supporters away.

Just after this Andy Seed and Pollock combined well and the move ended with Pollock fizzing a shot inches wide of the far post.

After Danby hit an effort wide for the visitors, welfare made another good attack with Luke Durham finding Romaniw who seemed to scuff his shot which was saved low to the left of Wells.

Just after the break welfare captain Jimmy Williams made a great block on the edge of the welfare six yard area to prevent a second Pickering goal.

After a short delay for a floodlight failure, the game resumed with Adam Walsh heading just over the bar.

At the other end Mitch Hamilton should have sealed the game but missed what appeared to be an easy headed chance.

However the second goal duly arrived on seventy five minutes. Keeper Watson started to come for a ball at the edge of the penalty area. He then seemed to be caught in two minds and tried to retreat but unfortunately he slipped, and this allowed ex-Welfare player Calum Ward to walk the ball into the empty net.
