Glasshoughton Welfare wasted a hatful of golden chances and paid the price in the home defeat to Teversal.

Despite carving Teversal open several times during the first half, Welfare conceded on the stroke of half-time.

Three more goals were leaked in quick succession on the hour.

To Glasshoughton’s credit, goals from Conor Glavin, Lewis Askiester and Nathan Keightley almost pulled off an unlikely comeback. But the damage had already been done.

Welfare captain Adam Hayton was also controversially sent off in the dying minutes.

The crux of Glasshoughton’s downfall was in the opening 15 minutes. Young striker Keightley raced through in the first 30 seconds and was denied. Ash Scothern then missed two chances when it appeared easier to score.

Those key moments came back to haunt Welfare as half-time approached and Brett Watson headed home’s Teversal’s first chance.

Worse was to follow as Teversal rattled home three quick-fire goals in the 60th, 61st and 65th minute – Kurt Bamford, Craig Mitchell and Luke Weaver scoring.

The only positive for the home side was their determination to try and claim an unlikely draw. Even at 4-0, Glasshoughton failed to lay down their swords. Their best player Glavin gave them initial hope by tapping home Keightley’s free kick.

Akeister then scored one of the goals of the season with a spectacular volley.

Teversal wasted the chance to put themselves out of sight as a Dave Cockerill blazed a penalty miles wide.

Hayton’s second yellow card for dissent soon followed before Keightley converted Ollie Maude’s cross to set up a nervy finale for the visitors. Ultimately it was little too late for Welfare.

What They Said

Who Was In Charge

Jamie Waters (6/10)

Darren Holmes described Waters’ performance as “below par” and you could why. Waters did not seem interested in talking to players and proceeded to hand out a ridiculous number of yellow cards in what was an easy game to manage.
