Garforth Town 4-1 Armthorpe Welfare

New Garforth Town hero Adam Turner scored a brilliant hat-trick to fire Garforth Town to a fourth consecutive league victory.

Until yesterday, you had to go back to the Steve Nichol glory days to find out when Garforth last achieved the same feat.

Nichol, the most successful Garforth manager in recent memory because of two West Riding County Cup final triumphs and a 5th place finish in the Evo Stik Division One North, guided the Miners to five straight league wins in April 2012.

The achievement is a testament to the efforts of Rob Hunter and his coaching staff, along with his “loyal and passionate” players.

The latest victory was started in 22nd minute after Armthorpe’s good start was undone. A poor defensive header fell to Turner, whose tremendous volley flew into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area. What a way to score your first goal for the club.

Turner scored again close to half-time with a goal from a similar distance.

Perennial hero Mark Simpson did get on the score-sheet after the break. The goal ensured that the young striker scored in all five of Garforth’s games in January. Simpson cleverly beat the offside trap from Mitch Hamilton’s through. Welfare goalkeeper Adam Stevens rashly sprinted 30 yards out of his goal, leaving Simpson with an easy finish.

The fourth goal soon arrived after Garforth successfully defended a Armthorpe corner. The ball was sent forward and Simpson’s majestic flick-on allowed Jack McMurrough to sprint clear. He spotted the run of Turner to his left and a pass allowed the striker to complete his treble.

Garforth legend Mick Jones pulled a goal back for Armthorpe in the last few minutes.
