Shaw Lane have “unfinished business”

Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup

Shaw Lane AFC manager Craig Elliott

Craig Elliott admitted that Shaw Lane AFC have “unfinished business” with the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup after the semi-final victory over Penistone Church.

Lane will face either Handsworth Parramore or Frickley Athletic in the showpiece final at Bramall Lane next month – almost a year since they pulled out 24 hours before they were due to face Frickley in last year’s final.

That was because the final was scheduled 24 hours before a crucial Evo Stik Division One South play-offs semi-final and the Ducks were unwilling to play two games in two days. Shaw Lane were later fined £1420 by the Sheffield FA.

Next month’s final fits in perfectly with their schedule and Elliott said: “I do feel that there is unfinished business.

“We were gutted to have to pull out last year and as a manager it was hard to take because you do this job to be part of finals.

“It is nice to get there two years on the trot and we’ll be there.”

Shaw Lane eventually ran out 3-1 winners against Penistone in front of nearly 250 people in Barnsley.

Alex Byrne’s double gave Shaw Lane a commanding lead before Church captain Danny Howes was sent off for violent conduct.

Penistone were the better side with ten men in the second half and deservedly pulled a goal back through Jack Moore.

A dramatic comeback was averted when Gary Burnett added Shaw Lane’s third in the final minute.
