Darren Holmes declared himself pleased after Glasshoughton Welfare got their pre-season campaign off to a victorious start.
Holmes and joint manager Lee Vigars watched on as Welfare won 4-2 at West Yorkshire League side Whitkirk Wanderers.
“It was a good workout,” Holmes told Non League Yorkshire.
“To say we have only had three training sessions, I’m really pleased with how it went.
“We start with a win and it is good to get off to one.
“The lads have worked really hard. They played some good stuff in the first half especially. They kept the ball well, knocked it around well and scored some quality goals.
“We know we have a lot to do. There’s still a lot of training sessions to come, as well as six or seven games before the season starts.”
Glasshoughton have yet to confirm any new signings or their retained list. However, Ryan Poskitt, Gaz Hunter, Conor Glavin and Ashley Scothern were among many familiar faces playing at Whitkirk.
“The majority of last season’s lads have returned,” Holmes added.
“We have five or six new players who have joined us for pre-season so we’re going to give them some game-time to see what they are like.
“I’m sure we’ll also keep adding to the squad as we get nearer to the start.
“We do need to strengthen. We need a little bit more pace in the team as well as a bit more competition in another area, but the lads are working hard and we are pleased with what we have got at the moment.”
