Benn content with Garforth draw

Wayne Benn was content with the point his Hemsworth Miners Welfare side won at Garforth Town on Saturday.

The sending-off of Wells defender Jack Steers opened the door for Garforth to equalise in a game massively affected by the conditions.

“I was slightly disappointed overall because we felt we maybe could have held onto that 1-0 lead or even bettered it,” Benn told Non League Yorkshire.

“But I think it was literally a tale of two halves in the respect of the wind blowing straight down the pitch, making it really difficult for both sets of players.

“I did feel that after getting our noses in front, playing against it might suit us if we got our passing game going.

“The sending-off put pay to that. I’m not sure if it was a red because there wasn’t amount in it, but I understand he was probably the last man.

“Jack’s first mistake though was that he was on the wrong side of his man.

“With ten men for 35 minutes and the wind against us and them pushing bodies forward it was always going to be difficult. The disappointing thing was that we conceded directly from the sending-off.

“I think if we had held out for five or ten minutes then maybe we would have been able to hang on.

“I don’t think there was any real quality in the game. It was a poor game spoiled by the wind. Overall though with the wind and having ten men for 35 minutes, 1-1 is not such a bad result.”

Hemsworth have started the season well. They won their first two matches before the defeat at Pontefract Collieries and the draw at Garforth.

“In terms of the start to the season, slightly disappointed in that we could have nicked a point at Pontefract and we maybe could have held onto three at Garforth,” he said.

“We have to move on and we have two difficult home games and we have to try and take maximum points in those two home games to make it a good start to the season.”
