Gowen and Collier score in victory

Toolstation NCEL Division One

Glasshoughton Welfare 0-2 Armthorpe Welfare

Chris Gowen scored a fluke goal in Armthorpe’s win over Glasshoughton

Goals from Chris Gowen and Gary Collier shot Armthorpe Welfare up into the play-offs zone.

It was a disciplined performance from Mike Carmody’s men who looked solid right across the park.

Glasshoughton began well as midfielder Lewis Akeister had a long range tipped wide of the post by Armthorpe goalkeeper Adam Stevens.

Both sides were well-matched during a competitive first half. The actual deadlock breaker was a bit of a fluke. The veteran Gowen had the chance to cross first time on the left-wing. He stalled, much to the ire of some, but in the end the cross was worth the wait as it somehow deceived Glasshoughton goalkeeper Jordan Bradshaw.

The best Glasshoughton had to offer in the second half was showman Ryan Poskitt’s effort which was cleared off-the-line by Gowen.

As the half meandered on, the home side ran out of ideas and never looked like equalising. The visitors were in control and comfortable.

Armthorpe put them out of their misery with ten minutes remaining when Collier burst through the home defence and found the net courtesy of a huge deflection.
