Star striker Rob Bordman introduced himself to his new supporters by scoring a sensational 45-yard free kick to set Ossett Town on their way to a 2-0 victory over Bradford City.
But its his manager John Reed who is taking the credit for the strike against League One outfit Bradford.
Bordman made his name at Wakefield FC for his knack of scoring audacious goals and that trend looks set to continue at Ossett.
His strike after the hour mark put Ossett in front and Luke Blackburn’s goal nine minutes from time ensured a perfect start to pre-season for Evo Stik Division One North side.
Ossett chief Reed said: “I have to take credit for the goal.
“I’m serious, just ask him. I said to him ‘look at the ‘keeper’ you can hit that’ and he did, straight into the top corner.
“I’m taking as much credit as he is. It was a magnificent strike.
“I keep having to pinch myself to say what a fantastic striker I have.”
Bordman’s wonder goal was seen by over 500 people at Ingfield – some of who won’t have been planning to turn up 24 hours earlier.
Ossett were only meant to be playing the Bradford youth team, but City cancelled their first team friendly at Farsley AFC and chose to send a stronger squad to Ossett.
The home side had to quickly ensure they had enough supplies like pies and officials will look back at the evening as a huge success.
City manager Phil Parkinson was present and his side put Ossett under the cosh in the opening exchanges.
Raffele Di Vita fired wide, while Reggie Lamb shot straight at Ossett’s number one goalkeeper Sam Dobbs.
Bordman came close to scoring on two occasions during the first half.
But his moment of glory arrived midway through the second half.
Ossett were awarded a free kick close to the halfway line and near the dugout – normally an area of the field which doesn’t give teams fears of conceding.
Bordman, who turned down Salford City this summer, saw an opportunity and literally put his foot through the ball and drove it into the top corner as City trialist goalkeeper Matt Urwin, who was off-his-line, desperately tried to reach for it.
Even the Bradford fans were impressed as Bordman raised his arms as if to say with a smirk on his face: ‘that was easy’.
That goal – which can be seen on Ossett Town’s official website – will live long in the memory of those present and Ossett deservedly held on to secure the win.
Reece Webb-Foster gave them a scare when his lob came back off the crossbar.
Ossett then scored their second goal. Chris Wood raced through, but Urwin stopped him in his tracks.
The ball became loose and Blackburn was able to drive it into the empty net.
There was still time for Ossett’s sub goalkeeper Brad Dixon to stake his claim for the number one jersey with a fine save from Lamb’s header.
It was a memorable stop, but it’s Bordman who gets all the plaudits for his role in the win that delighted Reed.
“It was a great workout when you think eight of them have played in the first team,” he added.
“I thought we worked extremely hard like you have to.
“I don’t think they dominated too much. If I’m being honest, I think the first half was 60/40 to them on possession, but they never really hurt us.
“I was very impressed with how we pressed them. I was impressed with how we passed the ball quickly when you think there was nine new faces.
“There were some great performances and it is a great start to pre-season.”
