Disability Football
Nostell Miners Welfare Disability Football team player Callum Deary has been nominated for the Disability Sport Yorkshire Sportsman of the Year award.
Callum will be going to the organisation’s annual awards ceremony at Elland Road in mid-March to see if he has won the award.
The 19-year-old is up for the award after being picked for the Mencap GB squad which will compete at the European Championships in Geneva in the summer.
The judging panel will have been impressed by this achievement as until last September, he had never played for a team before and simply played football in either his garden or in his street.
NLY Community Sport coaches Connor Rollinson and James Grayson, who are in charge of the Nostell team, are throughly delighted with the news.
Connor said: “Myself and James are over the moon. We have only been going five months and we have another major achievement on the books.
“Callum should be really proud of himself. Getting in the Mencap GB team was one thing, but to be nominated for a regional award is just as good. He’s now going to a prestigious venue where there will be well-known faces, to potentially collect an award.
“For someone not actively playing organised football five months ago, that is quite some achievement.
“Like we said last month, Callum’s achievements send out a clear message about the kind of opportunities available.”
Callum has had more good news this week as Nostell have donated £150 towards the cost of his trip to Geneva.
Club secretary Granville Marshall and Crofton Community Centre manager and club stalwart Wayne Ball presented the cheque on-the-pitch prior to Nostell’s superb 4-1 win over Selby Town on Friday.
Callum still needs to raise a little bit more for his trip, but he is confident that the final total will be hit by the end of the week.
He has persuaded Connor and James to take part in a fundraiser straight after this Friday’s training session. It will see the pair get ‘custard pied’ by Callum and his Nostell team-mates who are collecting sponsorship this week.
Callum is hoping the small fundraiser will bring in £100.
