Red hot Gary Collier helped Selby Town keep their faint play-offs hopes alive with a victory that relegated Brigg Town.
Selby still need an effort worthy of a team of superheroes and a bit of luck if a top six finish is to be achieved. Christian Fox’s men need to win all their remaining three matches and hope Glasshoughton Welfare and Hallam lose or draw their respective matches.
Selby began frantically as Liam Flanagan capitalised on kamikaze defending to break the deadlock after just 50 seconds. The striker then crossed for Collier in the third minute to put Selby into a strong position.
Selby then shot themselves in the foot with their own comedy act to allow Brigg back into it. Jack Tierney scored from distance 60 seconds after Collier’s goal to revitalise Brigg.
The writing was on the wall and the dangerous Matty Steeper breezed down the right to equalise and suddenly put FC Bolsover in the relegation zone.
Ultimately, Selby would snatch two further goals before the break to rescue Bolsover. Collier was involved again as he threaded the ball to Liam Snodin. The midfielder majestically took it down and scored with a fine turn and finish.
Collier then went from the sublime to the ridiculous. The former Armthorpe striker scored Selby’s goal of the season two weeks ago. Now he staked his claim for the most bizarre. In something out of a Morecambe and Wise sketch, Collier crashed into giant forward Danny Gray as both players attempt to win the ball from Flanagan’s cross. Somehow it dropped to Collier and he literally scuffed it, but sent it in a direction away from the Brigg goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.
Despite Brigg needing to go for broke, the second half was a non-event. Selby never got out of first gear, but goalkeeper Chris Barratt was never tested. Selby even had Reuben Pearse up front in the final throes and still looked dangerous.
Selby play Bolsover on Monday. That fixture is followed by home games with Dronfield Town on Tuesday and Swallownest on Thursday.
