West Riding County Cup
Huddersfield Town U19s 2-2 (4-5p) Selby Town
Heroic Selby Town pulled off another upset in the County Cup under Christian Fox after a stirring fight-back to beat a strong Huddersfield Town U19s side.
All hope looked lost on the hour mark as Darnell Mintus and Kit Elliott had appeared to have scored the goals to send the Terriers through, in the clash played at the home of Liversedge.
However, this is Selby and under Fox, tipped to be a future manager of York City, the Robins have an unbelievable record in the County Cup.
It was their County Cup heroics last season that helped christened their ‘Superheroes’ nickname – a run that saw them defeat FC Halifax Town, Bradford (Park Avenue) and Tadcaster Albion on their way to being surprise finalists.
Selby did not look capable of finding a way back, but a hopeful long punt downfield saw Liam Flanagan lob the Terriers goalkeeper on the hour.
Now revitalised, Selby pressed for the equaliser. A foul on electric Sam Cable did see a penalty given, but Flanagan’s effort was well-saved.
However, the disappointment was soon gone as Cable equalised with a fine strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Fox’s heroes were lucky to take the match to a penalty shootout as Huddersfield hit the post in stoppage time and there was also a header that should have really found the net.
In the shootout Huddersfield missed their first attempt before captain Ryan Gothard and Zac Lawrence scored for Selby.
Jordan Snodin’s saved effort allowed Huddersfield to level. Tension followed as Flanagan and Josh Berry converted.
Chris Bilton scored during sudden-death and goalkeeper Peter Lawrie saved the following penalty to propel Selby into the next round.
