Assistant manager Mark Smitheringale admitted that Garforth Town’s performance in the 2-0 FA Vase defeat to Sunderland Ryhope CW was not good enough.
The Miners went out of the Vase on a whimper after creating next to nothing – despite having tons of possession, especially in the first half.
Chris Trewick’s first half tap-in and Micky Rae’s second half strike eased Sunderland through.
“It was very disappointing and we didn’t really turn up today,” Smitheringale told Non League Yorkshire.
“I thought in the first half we started reasonably brightly and looked good in spells and different parts of the pitch.
“But our contribution in the final third and final pass was not really there. We conceded a very soft goal from corner so it is fair to say at half-time I was very frustrated.
“We have tried to work on keeping possession which is fine, but there becomes points in the game when you have to find a pass that actually penetrates.
“We didn’t do that well enough. When we did find passes, they weren’t executed well. It was a disjointed performance.
“Sunderland were happy to sit back and counter, but I didn’t actually think they were a threat on the counter. In the later stages of the game we were chasing it and it becomes a bit different.
“They were happy sitting in and defending deeply and we looked like we were comfortable playing in front of them without doing anything.
“There was no quality passing to get in behind them, nobody running beyond to create situations.
“The second half petered out. We changed the shape, went more direct and sent more people upfront, but it just didn’t happen for us.”
