Christian Fox remains on the hunt for a new right-back at Selby Town.
With star man Josh Rogerson now unavailable because of work commitments, Fox has spent the last few weeks searching for his replacement.
Negoiations with a highly-rated South Yorkshire-based NCEL right-back recently broke down. Cameron Collins threw his hat into ring during the Yorkshire Amateur friendly, but Fox is still weighing up options.
“Take the Yorkshire Amateur result out of it, we’ve had some decent results in pre-season,” Fox told Non League Yorkshire.
“They don’t count for much, but we’re not a million miles away. We don’t need to panic, but we are on the look-out for a couple.
“We’re looking for a right-back and we probably need to strengthen as a squad as well.
“We’ve had Nick (Kennedy) play there (right-back) in pre-season, but he’s another one who has got injured.
“Luke Sellars has also been out for three weeks so we’ve been playing without recognised full-backs. Because of the system we play they are important positions.
“We had a trialist in (against Yorkshire Amateur) and we have Sellars coming back soon.”
The 6-1 defeat to Yorkshire Amateur was the first major black spot of Selby’s pre-season, but Fox insists his squad have not grown tired of the longest pre-season in history.
“Yeah it has been a drag and we didn’t envisage playing as many games as we put in,” he said.
“We only really wanting four or five and we were hoping the season was going to start earlier than it is.
“I don’t think people are fed up because there is light at the the end of the tunnel with the season kicking off with the FA Vase.
“There’s something to play for now and we just need to be right for two weeks’ time.”
Fox also agrees that his side have picked more injuries than expected, something other managers have reported.
“We’ve had a few niggly injuries and we’ve played quite a few games recently,” he said.
“That’s the nature of it. That’s what you’re going to get with such a long layoff and players not doing anything.
“Obviously with Non League you haven’t got the contact time with the players so you need to trust them to do stuff themselves and look after their own bodies.”
