Toolstation NCEL Division One Round-Up (1)
Mark Maspero’s FC Humber United astonishingly thrashed Dronfield Town 7-1 on the opening day of the season.
Humber, tipped by many for relegation due to a series of poor results in pre-season, were incredibly 5-0 up by half-time.
Harry Watson, Liam Mulligan, Jamie Baxter, Jamie Phillips and Brandon Burke all hit the target in the first half for rebranded Humber, whose side mainly contains young players who have never played NCEL football before.
Cameron Hall added two further goals in the second half after Christian Savage had pulled once back for Dronfield.
Even Maspero must have been surprised as on his club website in the match preview, Maspero said: “We were quietly confident with the current players registered, but after several challenging pre-season games, we realise that we are missing a few vital ingredients. Once we rectify these short falls we will be a very competitive team and we will expect to finish mid table.”
The victory certainly gives hope of that aim being achieved.
Dark horses Rossington Main overturned a half-time deficit to get off to flyer with the 4-2 defeat of Ollerton Town.
Niall’s Doran’s early opener was cancelled out by two first half Ollerton Town goals.
Jack Watson equalised and Paul Sherburn’s double won it for Ben Hunter’s side.
Sam Ackroyd’s hat-trick secured Andy Dawson’s Parkgate a 3-0 victory at Retford FC.
His first two goals were scored in the opening five minutes.
