NPL Division One East
Yorkshire Amateur have signed ex-Chelsea left-back Ben Gordon from Division rivals Pontefract Collieries.
Gordon’s exit from Beechnut Lane, one week on from the unforgettable FA Cup battle with FC Halifax Town, was announced an hour before Ponte’s West Riding County Cup First Round tie at Harrogate Railway.
The defender could potentially make his debut for the Ammers in tonight’s County Cup tie with Tadcaster Albion at Bracken Edge.
He was an unused substitute when the Ammers beat Ponte in the FA Trophy first qualifying round so he could also be available for Saturday’s third qualifying battle at Stalybridge Celtic.
Gordon originally started his career in the Leeds United academy before moving to Chelsea in 2007 during the period they also took Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo from Thorp Arch and famously had to pay significant compensation.
After leaving Chelsea, Gordon played in the Football League 50 times across a stint with Colchester United and loan spells with Yeovil Town, Peterborough United, Tranmere Rovers and Birmingham City.
He also won the Scottish League Cup when Kilmarnock beat Celtic in 2012 at Hampden Park.
He then dropped into Non League Football and has played for Chester, Bradford (Park Avenue), Woking, Boston United, Shaw Lane, Gainsborough Trinity and Matlock Town.
Gordon joined Ponte during the brief Andy Monkhouse era and was one of the first to pledge to stay under Craig Rouse’s regime.
