NCEL League Cup Second Round
Maltby Main p1-1 North Ferriby
Hugo Warhurst was Maltby Main’s penalty king after saving two in his side’s 4-2 shootout victory over North Ferriby at Muglet Lane.
The victory was deserved for Maltby who almost suffered late heart-break as Jackson Jowett equalised for Ferriby out of nowhere in the dying minutes to force penalties.
That goal came from a long throw and ironically Maltby’s first half opener had as well.
Reggie Waud’s header was the highlight of a fairly nondescript first half which both teams huffed and puffed.
Connor Cutts’ long throw was a menace for Ferriby all night and Waud got on the end of one towards the end of the first stanza.
Maltby dominated the second half and were guilty of missing several chances to finish their visitors off.
Cutts’ long throw appeared numerous times and Maltby had a lot of corners too.
In an early second half raid, ex-Westella goalkeeper Louis Exall batted Cameron Hough’s close range header away.
Waud then went close with a free kick that Exall pushed out for a corner.
Cutts had a chance of his own after some intelligent footwork but fired wide of the post.
All these moments came back to haunt Maltby as Ferriby equalised with a minute to go.
Chris Bolder’s men had created little but it did not matter when an absolute missile of a long throw from Josh Dennett found its way to the back-post where an unmarked Jackson Jowett was waiting.
Ferriby finished with ten men as Ben Leyland was red carded for a challenge on Alex Hardwick that the referee deemed reckless.
The shootout saw Jamie Austin, Jed McGowan, Cutts and Hardwick score for Maltby.
Tom Corner and Jowett put their spot kicks away for Ferriby but efforts from Danny Buttle and Levi Tarbotton were saved by Warhurst.
