Goole AFC’s never-say-die attitude is pleasing manager Mike Carmody.
Goole, who have won three on the spin, are up to the lofty heights of ninth after their best start to a season in years but it is their ability to rescue late draws or wins that is the hallmark of their campaign.
Carmody’s men simply run through brick walls and two of their last three wins have been courtesy of two late goals and the Goole boss paid tribute to his men.
“The proof is in the hard work,” Carmody told Non League Yorkshire.
“We don’t have superstars, we have a team and it is about the team and the club and how we do things right.
“It is paying dividends at the moment but football changes, doesn’t it.
“For me, we need to settle in for a couple of years then try and kick on.
“But the lads are showing great effort and determination and they’ve been brilliant.
“I say never-say-die in training – they hate getting beat.
“If one team is losing in training, they just hate it.
“(Where we are in the league table) is massive for the club.
“I’ve mentioned it numerous times but it is about getting everyone at the club on a positive level.
“That’s the main thing, the club is positive throughout at the minute and that is reflecting on the field.
“Winning football games does help but we’re all pulling in the right direction now which is great to see.”
Ninth they may be but Carmody is not getting carried away and won’t be setting any bold goals.
“I will literally concentrate on the next game,” he said.
“I know that’s a cliche and I know it is not what everyone wants to hear but I’ve learnt through a lot of years in management to not look too far ahead.
“Just concentrate on what we’re doing next, can we win the next game, brilliant if we can?
“There is no target.
“The target was always to stay in the league and then kick on.
“You stay in the league first and foremost and you kick on week-after-week and that’s what we’re trying to do.
“That’s what it is all about at the minute.
“The management team is together, the club is together and the team is together.”
Goole are due to welcome Thackley to the Victoria Pleasure Grounds tomorrow.
