Johnson heads Penistone to round two win at Hemsworth

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division

Hemsworth Miners Welfare 1-2 Penistone Church

Penistone Church hero Ryan Johnson

Ryan Johnson’s second half header was the difference for in-form Penistone Church in the round two battle at Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

Johnson headed home from a corner two minutes after Jay Davis had levelled for Hemsworth.

Nathan Keightley had given Penistone the lead in the first half of the the replayed clash.

The result sums up struggling Hemsworth’s season.

There Shane Kelsey’s men were back in October, all set to pick up three points up with 20 minutes to go against a Penistone team on a downward spiral during the adaption period under Steve Lenthall.

Then a ‘lone ranger’ caused the abandonment and now in November, the Wells walked off with nothing after losing to a Penistone who won for the fifth time in six matches.

Church looked like a side playing with confidence.

Layton Swaine rattled their side-netting early doors but on a whole Church goalkeeper Chris Snaith had a relatively quiet night.

At the other end, Wells goalkeeper Dan Morton was a busy guy throughout – with a smart save from Brett Lovell’s bullet header being the first test.

That was a first of a number of good saves.

Reece High then rattled the post with a blast.

Eventually the pressure told and Keightley broke the offside trap and beat Morton, with help off the post.

Hemsworth fought back around the hour mark.

Davis forced his way past two Penistone players – including a cheeky nutmeg through Elliott Firth – before lashing a low shot into the left-hand bottom corner.

Parity was only in place for 120 seconds as the effectively unmarked Johnson met a Church corner to win it.
