Sheffield & Hallamshire Association Cup Quarter-Final
Athersley Rec Development 1-4 Penistone Church Reserves
Holders Penistone Church Reserves romped into the semi-finals but at a cost as key men Owen Wildblood and Harley Wilson were sent off in the second half.
Two goals from former Worsbrough Bridge man Ryan Hallsworth helped Penistone ease to victory in a game they were leading 4-1 before the red cards.
Penistone, the 2018 and 2019 winners of the competition, are far so joined by AFC Dronfield and South Elmsall United Services in the semi-finals.
Penistone, second-placed in the County Senior League Premier Division, seized control of their trip to Athersley on the stroke of half-time.
The first half had been a damp squib up to then.
Church’s Florent Fadiga had hit the crossbar with header while evergreen Athersley forward Ryan Eastwood missed a sitter.
The two first half goals came from free kicks.
Hallsworth’s fine delivery into the six-yard box was met by the diving header of Wilson.
Literally a few minutes later Wildblood’s free kick from a deep area was initially headed out.
Jack Moore nodded it back into the six-yard-box and Hallsworth timed his run to perfection before heading home.
Hallsworth scored again after the break along with Will Stead.
Athersley pulled one back before ex-Worsbrough and Hemsworth Miners Welfare defender Wildblood and associate Wilson were shown straight red cards.
Athersley themselves were reduced to ten men before the end.
Penistone are due to travel to Ougtibridge War Memorial in a Premier Division fixture next Saturday.
