Aidan Day’s hat-trick helped Eccleshill United move to within touching distance of leaders Grimsby Borough.

Eccleshill beat relegation threatened Hemsworth Miners Welfare at home to go three points behind Grimsby with a game-in-hand.

Day placed Lee Elam’s promotion-chasers ahead in the eighth minute but Hemsworth were able to hit back through Jay Davis’ free kick.

Parity lasted literally a minute as Day scored again to ensure Eccleshill led at half-time.

Day completed his treble on the hour and recent signing Tabish Hussain completed the win late-on.

Captain Dan Coupland held his nerve to score a very late penalty for Garforth Town whose 2-2 draw with Silsden meant they lost further ground on Eccleshill.

Josimar Bradshaw twice put Silsden in front and both times Coupland equalised for Garforth.
