Wombwell boss backs Swinton for title

Wombwell Main manager Terry Simon

Wombwell Main chief Terry Simon is backing Swinton Athletic for the title as the race for top spot heads towards the final furlongs.

Six weeks are remaining in the County Senior League and leaders Swinton currently hold a seven point lead – although teams have games-in-hand.

“Dodworth have a good side and looking at the teams they have to play, they could get a run together and be the dark horses to win the league,” Simon told Non League Yorkshire.

“My top three would be Swinton, Dodworth and Wakefield.

“Swinton are the favourites and at this moment in time I think they will win it.

“Penistone will probably finish fourth and Ecclesfield fifth.

“We still have everyone to play again – we have Swinton, Penistone, Dodworth, Ecclesfield to play so whilst we won’t win the league, we could have a say in it.

“I’d us to finish higher but realistically I think we will finish sixth.”

The Iceman Danny Frost made a fairytale return for Wombwell Main last Saturday

Whether they finish sixth or not, Simon ranks the campaign as a positive one because of his youth revolution.

“I think this season has been a success for us,” he said.

“We had four 18-year-olds playing at Dodworth on Saturday so I think that’s a big success.

“We had a couple more who are early 20s so our average age will be low.”

Wombwell visit High Green Villa tomorrow.
