Thornton hits four on Gawber return while Showman fires Silkstone to brink of the title

Caped crusaders: North Gawber goal machine Matty Thornton and Silkstone United hero Showman Ryan Poskitt

Club favourite Matty Thornton enjoyed a spectacular return to North Gawber as he scored four times in the 8-1 demolition of Sheffield Town FC.

The win puts Scott Chipchase’s side on course for a top nine finish.

The conversion rate was a big one for North Gawber whose other goal-scorers were Matt Blakey, Carey Welford and Dec Welford.

Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 went second after taking advantage of freak weather in Featherstone causing the postponement of Wakefield AFC and Dodworth Miners Welfare.

The Ecclesfield won 2-0 at Jubilee Sports.

Ed Bollington and Mark Groves scored for Ecclesfield.

Swinton Athletic double goal-scorer Jonathan Billups

The postponement also allowed leaders Swinton Athletic to extend their lead on the chasing pack of Wakefield and Dodworth,

Goals from Jonathan Billups (2), Sam Green and Regan Kelly led them to a 4-0 defeat of Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves.

Arnie Grayson (2), David Shepherd, Adam Thomas and Joe Appleyard scored in Oughtibridge War Memorial’s 5-1 win over High Green Villa.

Wombwell Town double goal-scorer Will Harling

The pulsating race for the top three promotion spots continues to have twists and turns after leaders South Kirkby Colliery won 2-0 at rivals Denaby Main.

Handworth Reserves won 3-0 against New Bohemians while Will Harling’s double earned ten man Wombwell Town a 2-1 win at AFC Dronfield.

Gareth McDermott was dismissed for two bookable offences.

Handsworth, Wombwell and Denaby all have multiple games-in-hand which could see them significantly South Kirkby who only have two games to play.

Showman Ryan Poskitt in action for Silkstone United last year

Showman Ryan Poskitt scored one of the most important goals of his illustrious career to put Silkstone United on the brink of the title.

Former Glasshoughton Welfare and Worsbrough Bridge great Poskitt hit a trademark screamer to edge Silkstone to a 1-0 victory at rivals Swinton Athletic Reserves.

Silkstone need a draw from next week’s clash with Wakefield AFC under 23s to secure the crown.
