Eccleshill United were beaten on penalties at Kempston Rovers after a 2-2 draw after extra-time.
Kempston survived, just, to keep hold of their Step 4 after winning the shootout 5-4 to deny Eccleshiill promotion to the Northern Premier League for the first time in the club’s history.
Eccleshill must have been dreaming at one stage as they took the lead in the second half.
Lee Elam’s men trailed at half-time, but they went onto stun their hosts with two quick-fire goals.
Stalwart Sam Bradley equalised before Sumaili Cissa placed them ahead.
Kempston equalised in the 68th minute and that was it on the scoring front until the shootout.
