Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division
Wombwell Main 0-2 Wakefield AFC
Ambitious Wakefield AFC have one hand on the County Senior League top flight title after overcoming a tricky test against Terry Simon’s Wombwell Main young guns.
Jake Morrison’s first half effort and captain James Morris’ second half header ensured Gabe Mozzini’s side moved to within one win of all but clinching the championship in front of a packed ground.
If they beat Oughtibridge on Saturday then the crown is Wakefield’s unless Dodworth Miners Welfare score a ridiculous amount of goals in their next two games and then win at Wakey on the final day of the campaign.
Despite missing leading goal-scorer Ryan Wingrove and pacy young starlet Bailey Cowsell – alongside losing goal machine Jordan Kershaw in the warm-up – Wombwell posed a lot of questions of their visitors in the opening half-hour.
Three times Wombwell had good chances along with two penalty shouts.
Falling behind was harsh on them and it came out of nothing.
Morrison’s low speculative strike from distance deceived injured goalkeeper Steve Crossland and it sunk Wombwell.
The home side tired as the game wore on and Morris’ close range header squashed the tension and sent Wakefield’s fans home dreaming of glory.
