Wombwell Main 2-1 Oughtibridge War Memorial

Wombwell Main striker Ryan Wingrove celebrating his first goal

Wombwell Main hero Ryan Wingrove lobbed the Oughtibridge goalkeeper literally in the dying seconds to propel his side into the League Cup second round.

Penalties were looming after captain marvel Adam Thomas had hit a late long range stunner for the visitors, cancelling out Wingrove’s first half opener.

Wombwell had enough chances in the opening 45 minutes to win several games.

Wingrove hit the post and there were two goal-mouth scrambles that Oughtibridge miraculously survived conceding from – one in particular from Owen Sykes’ long throw.

Returning club favourite Gadhafi Kiwanuka laid the foundation for the deadlock breaker in the 22nd minute.

His defence-splitting pass sent close confidante Wingrove away and the top Step 7 forward drilled a low shot past the visiting goalkeeper.

Wombwell failed to build on their lead.

Atley Jackson went close with a header in the second half but Terry Simon’s men tired and began kicking the ball anyway, allowing Oughtibridge to slowly gain control.

When Thomas hit a beauty from 30 yards with eight minutes to play, it was no more than they deserved.

The visitors then looked set to score a winner as Wombwell appeared down and out.

Penalties were literally a minute away when the hosts pounced out of nowhere.

Versatile Aaron Tate is well known for his trademark magical vision for a long pass and he sent an incredible ball over the top to send Wingrove away.

The striker only had the ‘keeper to beat and he lobbed him to spark the celebrations which saw manager Simon sprinting down the touchline like a young Jose Mourinho.

Wingrove’s own celebrations did not end well as he limped off injured.
