Ian Richards has added new faces to his injury-hit Stocksbridge Park Steels squad.

Young midfielder Leigh Whelan arrived from Chesterfield under 23s on Friday along with centre-back Keegan Townrow who joins from Grantham Town.

The Steels host Cleethorpes Town this afternoon.

On Whelan, Richards said: “He is the perfect fit for our squad – young with an excellent attitude and work ethic and has the hunger to develop and achieve.

“He will provide quality and competition in midfield and also experience at this level after playing for Sheffield FC last season and Matlock Town at the start of this one. Huge thank you to Neil Cluxton and Chesterfield for allowing the move to happen.”

On Townrow, he said: “It was refreshing to talk to a player about beliefs, principles and values in football rather than money. He is a positive signing – young, eager to learn and improve, great attitude and commitment.

“He will provide depth and quality to our defensive options. He has experience at this level with Grantham Town, and started his career at Doncaster Rovers. Both him and Leigh will go straight into our squad for tomorrow.”
