EV2 Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League Premier Division
Dodworth Miners Welfare chief Darren Young expects Wombwell Main to be on a revenge quest in tomorrow’s unmissable 1.30pm clash.
The two giants of the County Senior League will meet just off junction 37, with both looking to continue their positive starts to the season.
Wombwell boss Terry Simon has probably been a tortured soul in recent months due to sleepless nights as two of their last three competitive fixtures with Dodworth have ended in heart-break in narrow defeats.
Young expects Wombwell to be determined to set the record straight.
“We played them in the charity game in pre-season and in the League Cup and they have been unlucky against us,” Young told Non League Yorkshire.
“We scraped over-the-line in the League Cup and they’ll be fancying themselves to roll us over.
“They were the better team for 70 minutes and they will have walked off the pitch wondering how they got beat.
“They probably feel they have a point to prove because we have beaten them in the last few games.
“You know what you get from a Terry Simon team so we know what they’re about.
“We know what we will face.”
Dodworth suffered a bad start to the campaign as they lost 1-0 to Wombwell Town on the opening day.
They have since recovered having beaten Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves, Oughtibridge War Memorial and Sheffield Town – delivering a response that has pleased former Barnsley defender Young.
“I still think we are a wee way off playing to what we should be looking like,” he said.
“We have worked hard on fitness in the last few weeks because I don’t think we were fit enough.
“We have kind of addressed that but I still think we’re a couple of yards short of where we need to be.
“We have picked up some points and gone from not having a good start to having a half-decent start.
“The first game of the season was a wake-up call.
“It was good for us in a weird way because it focussed us and we have trained really hard.
“Two weeks ago was a massive test for us when we were 1-0 down to a good Oughtibridge team who bullied us.
“Second half we were really good.
“Last week against Sheffield Town we did what we needed to do in a tough environment.
“It sets us up nicely for Wombwell.”
Young also agrees that the Premier Division title race appears to be wide open this season.
“I don’t really look at the league because everyone is jostling for positions,” he said.
“Once it gets to Christmas it’ll get clearer.
“The results look like all teams are hot and cold.
“I think five-or-six teams could win the league this year but we’ll get a better picture in December or January.
“I don’t think any team is going to run away with the league this year.”
