Selby Town manager Dave Ricardo has pledged to carry on despite a poor season
Dave Ricardo has vowed to carry on at Selby Town and turn their fortunes around.
Ricardo has so far been unable to return Selby to their past glories as his team lie in the middle of the Toolstation NCEL Division One table fell below their targets for the campaign.
Selby travel to Hall Road Rangers tomorrow, a few days after the 4-1 collapse to Hemsworth Miners Welfare and Ricardo said: “There are things I would have done differently (this season) and I’ll learn from that.
“This is my third year in management and I think we are learning game by game and to be fair we’re not far off at the moment.
“It is just a case of the lack of wins. We have not been beaten many times. The fact you don’t win games becomes a habit.
“We have a young side and we need to stick together because we’ll get the results.
“I had a chat with the chairman two weeks ago and he asked ‘have we any plans for the rest of the season for bringing players in and turning it around’?
“I’m do confident in doing so. At the end of the season we’ll have another sit down and I still want to be here for two seasons and the foreseeable future.
“It is case of the chairman, committee and the fans continuing to be patient with a young team. With a young team you are going to get some inconsistency.
“If you can be patient then that patience will be rewarded.”
Selby had high hopes for the campaign when former Beverley Town boss Ricardo was appointed as their tenth manager in four years last summer.
The season started brightly with three straight victories and excellent runs in the FA Cup, Vase and West Riding County Cup.
But, Selby are now on a run of one win in 14 matches and there is also the fact that they have used seven different goalkeepers since the start of the season.
Asked why the season has gone wrong, Ricardo said: “It is down to a lot of things. We have a young side and we have had a young side since about October and we haven’t been able to get the same team out.
“You are where you deserve to be at this stage in the season. There’s various reasons why we’re there.
“We can turn it round. There are 14 games to go and we got a decent draw on Saturday (against Eccleshill).
“We gave away two stupid goals which we are doing too much of. At the moment we are a team who need to score three goals to even look comfortable.
“On paper we have some winnable games coming up. We have Hall Road, Lincoln next Tuesday so we need wins.
“The amount of draws we have had is crackers and I think with a little more nous and little bit quality at both ends of the pitch then we would have done much better.
“Another part of it is that we haven’t had a steady goalkeeper all season.
“Unfortunately Mark Wilberforce had the nasty leg break and I think if Mark had been with us then I think the back four would have been a lot more settled and we would have kept a lot more clean sheets.
“It was up to me to get another goalkeeper and unfortunately we have gone through four or five and various reasons they haven’t worked and that was the same on Tuesday night.”
