Shaw Lane Aquaforce narrowed the gap on leaders Worksop Town with an impressive 4-0 victory at local rivals Athersley Recreation last night in the big Barnsley derby.
It is the first time that Aquaforce have taken bragging rights in the clash since their arrival in the NCEL last season.
Shaw Lane lost heavily in the now-expunged Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup tie earlier this season which took place before the 1-1 draw in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division in September.
Hundreds once again turned out in wet conditions for the eagerly-anticipated game and those present got to see the return of dangerous striker Danny Frost for Shaw Lane.
An own goal set Aquaforce on their way – Scott Alcock the unlucky player after just eight minutes.
A thunderbolt from captain Sam Denton doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Any hopes of an Athersley comeback were extinguished straight after the interval when Anton Foster added the third.
Gary Stohrer rubbed salt into Athersley’s wounds in the final minute with the fourth.
Aquaforce are now just five points behind Worksop with three games in hand.
Worksop face a tiring trip to Thackley on Saturday, while Shaw Lane host Heanor Town in the third game of the Easter GroundHop on the same day at 4.45pm.
