Hull United trounced Liversedge 5-0
Hull United trounced Liversedge this afternoon with a vintage second half display to win 5-0 against their higher ranked opponents.
After Brett Agnew’s 12th minute opener the win was never really in doubt and although United had to remain patient for the goals to flow they blew away their counterparts with a fine second half performance.
Hull United boss Curtis Woodhouse named a strong side for the match with Phil Dobson, James Piercy and Brett Agnew all restored to the starting line up. Jamie Richardson was fancied up front after his performance in the 2-1 midweek win over Wawne United.
Brett Agnew was denied on ten minutes when a free kick from the left was directed to the far post however the striker was thwarted with his effort on goal but earning a corner in the process.
The Hull United fans were then brought to their feet with a team goal of real quality two minutes later. With a swift passing tempo the ball worked its way out onto the right hand touchline and after a pin-point cross Agnew timed his run perfectly to meet the ball from close range to tap home.
Liversedge responded well, and a surging run led to a cross having to be dealt with by Phil Dobson and Marcus Hall with the latter hammering the ball clear having had the ball palmed into his path.
United restored their dominance though when James Playhouse ran through the centre and his pass to the right fed Jamie Richardson but his effort missed the target. Richardson again used his pace on 33 minutes when beating a defender at the by-line on the left however from a tight angle Richardson fizzed his powerful effort past the far post.
The visitors threatened briefly at the start of the second half as they grazed the crossbar from a half volley and Dobson positioned himself well to save a powerful effort.
It was only two minutes after the restart though when Jamie Richardson grabbed his second goal in a week, doubling United‘s advantage in the process. His blistering pace saw him outdo his marker on the left and having appeared to take the ball too far Richardson cleverly clipped the ball over the keeper from six yards out.
The second goal killed off ‘Sedge as on 62 minutes along came the third. A perfectly whipped in corner into the six yard box just evaded Agnew and was instead turned in by the diving head of an unfortunate Liversedge defender.
Two minutes later Jack Walters went close went cutting in from the right as his effort flew wide of the far hand upright but on 69 minutes there was no problem with Jack Walters accuracy as he added the fourth from a deflected free kick. From the right 20 yards from goal Walters effort appeared to be flying towards the corner before taking a deflection off the wall looping into the net.
A rampant Citizens completed the rout 16 minutes from time as debutant Josh Tennant got on the score sheet from the substitutes bench. A beautifully chipped through ball set Brett Agnew clear however with the angle on goal increasing the Scotsman showed great awareness and unselfishness to square the ball to Tennant who after swinging and missing his first effort from a bobble, Tennant cooly reset himself to finish past a covering Liversedge defender on the goal-line to add the fifth.
Liversedge to their credit despite the score-line continued to battle and substitute keeper Liam Gorden had to claw out a close range header destined for the top corner, but a free kick in a decent position seven minutes from time summed up their day as it smashed against the wall and the rebound rolled harmlessly wide, on an afternoon that belonged to Hull United
