Ian Richards is hoping to sign a new striker in time for Penistone Church’s Toolstation NCEL Division One home clash with Hull United tonight.
If the un-named player does agree to sign for Penistone, Richards does admit it will be “touch and go” on whether he takes part against Hull.
“We are interested in a striker and we have put seven days’ notice in on someone,” Richards said.
“He is making a decision on whether to play for us or stay where he is.
“We can’t offer him any financial incentive, but we can offer him the chance of playing for a promotion-chasing side and a team where he can develop as a player.”
Richards expects to know how Penistone Church’s season is likely to unfold in the next few games.
Penistone face a tough run of fixtures with Hull, Hallam and AFC Emley coming up.
“As a manager you should be disappointed with the first three games, but I’m not because we have had three good performances,” he said.
“Against Worsbrough we kept a clean sheet and took our chances. In the other two games (Shirebrook and Pontefract) we didn’t put them away.
“Because the performances have been good it fills me with confidence, but we start turning them into results.
“We now have two home games against two promotion favourites – Hallam and Hull. So it will be a good measure of seeing where we are at.
“I’ll have a good idea of whether promotion is a realistic ambition or whether we’ll be challenging for the top eight again.”
