Handsworth too strong for Nostell

Handsworth Parramore had too much quality for Nostell Miners Welfare in the 5-0 victory at Sandy Lane.

Responding to the frustrating goal-less stalemate with Liversedge in midweek, Handsworth wasted no time in taking the lead as Jon Froggatt struck in the seventh minute.

That was the most notable moment until a flood of goals in the second half of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division clash from Froggatt, Kieran Wells, Gareth Griffiths and substitute Alex Rippon.

The win maintains Handsworth’s positive start to the season which has seen them score 14 goals and keep clean sheets in all four games.

Nostell had hoped to replicate the incredible opening day victory at Cleethorpes Town. However, hopes of that evaporated early on as their own mistake from their own throw-in proved costly.

Froggatt, who hit four against Staveley in the FA Cup last week, received the ball and did the rest to ease any fears of a repeat of the Liversedge game.

Although Nostell boss Paul Lines is far from able to name his strongest team due to injuries, his side did cause Handsworth the odd problem in both halves.

Striker Tom Robinson, signed on dual-registration from Brighouse Town on Friday night along Connah Judson, had their best chance.

His low drive should arguably have had the net bulging, but an outstretched arm from Parramore goalkeeper Archie Sneath ensured that his clean sheet record remained intact.

Much to their frustration, Parramore were unable to build on their lead in the opening half.

The introduction of Rippon proved to be the spark they needed as the winger tore Nostell apart down the right-wing throughout the second half.

His superb cross close to the hour was met by the head of Wells for the second goal.

He then repeated the trick for Froggatt’s second when the ball evaded all of Nostell’s defenders and the former Belper striker had an empty net to head the ball into.

Defender Griffiths was the unlikely scorer of the fourth goal. He stayed forward from a Parramore corner and remained onside as Danny Booth’s whipping cross from right reached him. Without a thought, Griffiths struck the ball first time on the volley and scored the goal of the game.

Rippon earned his reward for a fine display in the dying minutes. The winger beat off Nostell captain Blaine Kellett and then got round goalkeeper Ben Saynor before sliding the ball home to round off a superb afternoon for Parramore.

Handsworth Parramore assistant manager Mick Godber:

“Over the 90 minutes it was comfortable and I think we controlled it.

“It was a good start and we dropped off. Like against Liversedge the other night we weren’t ruthless enough in front of goal.

“We got the crosses in, but it didn’t drop. In the second half, the first went in and we got four decent goals.

“To be fair to Nostell they kept going and had a couple of chances at the end.

“Paul’s sides don’t give in and luckily it is four clean sheets on the trot. In the first half I don’t think we were too good defensively, but that’s why you have a goalkeeper that saved you.

“He made a couple of good saves, but he didn’t have too much to do in the second half.”

Nostell Miners Welfare manager Paul Lines:

“To go in a 1-0 we were doing alright.

“We had been put under pressure, but we had a few chances. Lee Turner and so did Tom Robinson and we could have gone in at one-a-piece.

“We did rode our luck at times, but to go in at 1-0 against a decent side, I don’t think is too bad.

“I’m not laying the blame on anyone, but when we lost Jamie Allsop, they were getting in far too easily down our left-hand-side and we gave away some soft goals.

“Handsworth deserved to win, they had too much quality for us.”
